The everyday classic

Shapes to know
East-west bags are long and slim, sitting neatly under the arm. Baguette styles are smaller and work for evenings. Structured shoulder bags keep their shape and protect what is inside, while slouchy and hobo bags are softer and roomier. What to check before you buy
Look at the strap drop, the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag. Around 20 to 25 cm sits comfortably under the arm, even over a coat. Check the inside layout too: a zip pocket for keys and cards and a divider or two make a shoulder bag much easier to use. A zip or magnetic closure helps keep things secure.
Looking after it
Wipe leather with a soft, dry cloth and use a leather conditioner a few times a year. Faux leather and coated canvas only need a damp cloth. When the bag is not in use, fill it with tissue paper and keep it in its dust bag so the shape and the hardware stay looking new.
