Aquascutum was established in 1851 when tailer and entrepreneur John Emary opened his first high quality menswear shop on Regent Street which remains the flagship store today. By 1853 Aquascutum had invented the first waterproof cloth creating the raincoat to protect ladies and gentlemen from the English weather. Thus solving a perennial fashion problem, allowing individuals to preserve their elegance in the hustle and bustle of a city. Aquascutum had Royal following when his fashion applications were promoted by royal fashion leader King Edward VII. His majesty was the first royal client, ordering an Aquascutum coat in the Prince of Wales check. To this day the British royal family are long patronage of the company. Womenswear was opened in 1900 using similar names and fabrics, it was extremely popular with British suffragettes. The Aquascutum family owned the brand until 1990, when it was bought by Japenese textile conglomerate company Renown Incorporated.
