Emilio Pucci was one of the first designers with a recognizable high-status label and unique style. Starting out on the slopes of Zermatt in 1947 when a photo of a ski suit he had created made its way onto the pages of Harper’s Bazaar. Pucci branched out and expanded his business into many areas including handbags, scarves, sunglasses, tights, shoes, and lingerie. In 1950, Pucci opened a boutique in Capri, Italy (named Emilio of Capri), where he sold the tapered pants that became known as Capri pants. He also sold sexy silk shirts fitted to show off the female figure, shorts, resort dresses, slacks and casual shoes. He maintained a guiding eye on the business, by supervising all designing of his products. From the 1960s to the 1980s, his inspiration came from his travels to Cuba, Bali, India, Hong Kong, and Tanzania; these influences were mirrored in the prints he created. He signs his prints with Emilio, to make sure they are recognisable from the fakes. Now run by Pucci’s daughter, Laudomia, the family business took on Norwegian designer Peter Dundas in 2008, and continues to honour the love affair with Italian craftsmanship. Still a forerunner in the fashion industry Pucci has many admirers including: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Richie.
