We love new brand LILIFI on MyBag.com, so much so that we interviewed designer and founder of the brand Kathleen Reardon, read below to find out more…

 

When did you launch the Lilifi brand and what was the inspiration behind it?
Lilifi was established in 2008 with a contemporary jewellery line, our bag line launched in 2009, we haven’t looked back since.  The catalyst that started the brand was, noticing a niche in the market place for good quality product at a reasonable price, also, being born and bred in London, surrounded by amazing culture and shops has had a huge influence.

 How did you come up with the brand name and identity, how did it evolve?
The brand name is an acronym ‘like it, love it, flaunt it’.  I have always loved a play on words,
puzzles (bit of geek at heart really).  It sounded different, original and classic, to mirror the true
identity of the designs.

What inspires you as a designer?
As a designer, day to day, you are looking for something new, always asking the question, ‘how
can this translate into the work?’… Problem solving, creating, pushing boundaries, listening to the
customers’ demands, to find equilibrium.

Whose style do you admire?
There are a lot of people whose style I admire, but those who really get me thinking are children.
The way they are carefree and have no rules, they create, are fearless, how they break fashion
codes and re-invent new ones.

Where do you look for inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere, you just need to open your eyes and mind.

Describe the Lilifi style?
Functional, wild & classic

What obstacles have you faced since launching Lilifi and how did you overcome them?
There are never obstacles, only learning curves and experience.

What has been your biggest surprise?
How quickly time goes and progress happens.

What has been your biggest let down?
Not starting sooner!

What advice would you give to somebody wanting to start up their own label within the
fashion industry?
‘Quote from Angela Pattison (my course tutor many moons ago) ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to
fail’.
Start your journey; you never know where it will lead you.
Don’t be afraid of success, you rightly deserve it.

What do you think has been the key to the success of Lilifi?
Timing, listening and reacting quickly to market trends.  Putting the fun back into functional.

 Who are your favourite accessory/handbag designers or favourite labels/brands?
To name but a few, Ally Capellino, Alexander McQueen, Mulberry, Thomas Wilde, Marc
Jacobs… The list is endless; every season brings freshness and originality.

What celebrity would you love to see wearing Lilifi? (Who hasn’t already)
Michelle Williams.

What has been your favourite Lilifi style to date?
The black (or tan) studded satchel.

How would you describe the AW12 collection and what was the inspiration behind the
collection?
For AW 2012/13, LILIFI brings production home to the UK for the classic collection.  Jewel
colours and eco-hedonism head up the theme for both production homes.

How has the range developed?
Range development happens organically, driven by sale through and customer demand and
market trends.

How do you see the brand developing, what are your hopes and ambitions for the future of
Lilifi?
Developing with our loyal customer base and keeping the look in line with the classic and wild
LILIFI signature.  Our ambition, ‘to be a long standing and recognised UK bag manufactured
brand’ worldwide.
